At the end of 2023, the net worth of Italian families was €11,286 billion, up 4.5% over the previous year. This is the highest level recorded since 2005, when accessible records began. However, when accounting for inflation, household net wealth is still more than seven percentage points lower than in 2021, owing to the high inflation that characterized 2022. This is the conclusion drawn from the Bank of Italy and Istat's combined annual report, which provides a comprehensive perspective of Italian economic assets while also providing worldwide comparisons. The value of non-financial assets held by Italian households climbed by 1.6%, with housing accounting for the majority of the rise for the second consecutive year. Financial assets increased by 7.1% due to the strong performance of financial markets, including equities, mutual funds, and insurance reserves. Another key factor is the increase in holdings of assets, particularly public ones, with Italian households investing heavily this year. In international comparison, Italian households' net wealth in relation to income remained steady in 2023, similar to countries such as Canada and Germany.
