The Lombardy Region, the first in Italy, has opted to use drones to perform phytosanitary treatments on crops. The tests will be conducted on vineyards and rice in the provinces of Sondrio and Pavia. Italy is one of the world's most virtuous countries in terms of pesticide reduction. Between 2010 and 2021, farmers cut their purchases by 17%, from 140 thousand to 115 thousand tons. However, Europe requests additional cutbacks, which can only be obtained by a more focused usage of chemicals. The Lombardy Region's experimental activity on the vine will be conducted at the La Castellina farm of the Fojanini Foundation in Sondrio. The vineyard is a terraced area of approximately half a hectare, situated at an altitude of 325 meters in the Sassella area of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG. The vineyard's location meets the minimum safety distance requirements from residences, public access areas, watercourses or reservoirs, and green and leisure areas. Drones will carry out phytosanitary treatments to control two of the most common vine diseases: downy mildew and powdery mildew.
