After years of crisis, the Alitalia brand is back in the skies. The new shareholder, Lufthansa, has chosen international routes to restore the historic Italian brand, which cost the Germans 90 million euros and has a tremendous appeal in the collective consciousness of travelers. The relaunch starts with three new Airbus aircraft featuring a blue livery with the inscription "Inspired by Alitalia." The inaugural flight, Rome-Tokyo, takes off in February, with future routes planned for the USA, Canada, and South America. If the venture proves successful, additional flights to Asia may follow. The first aircraft to wear the livery will be a new-generation Airbus A350 operating on long-haul routes. During the summer of 2025, "Inspired by Alitalia" will appear on two further aircraft: an Airbus A321neo for medium-haul routes and an Airbus A220-100 for short-haul routes. The additional destinations will be officially announced in the coming months; however, there are speculations of new connections with Brazil (Rome-São Paulo), Argentina (Rome-Buenos Aires), and North America. The expansion will occur gradually. Both the new president, Sandro Pappalardo, and the CEO, Joerg Eberhart, recalled that Ita (former Alitalia) carried 18 million passengers in 2024 (+20% over 2023) and generated revenues of 2.7 billion (+26%).
