Bruno Pizzul, the legendary sports commentator, has passed away at the hospital in Gorizia just days before his 87th birthday. Born in Udine on March 8, 1938, he was the official voice of the Italian national team, narrating their matches from the 1986 World Cup in Mexico to Korea-Japan 2002.
Joining Rai in 1969, Pizzul commentated on dozens of Serie A and international cup matches, becoming a beloved figure for football fans. One of his most painful memories was the tragic night of the Heysel disaster in 1985, an event he wished he had never had to report.
Beyond live commentary, he also hosted programs such as Domenica Sprint and La Domenica Sportiva. Before turning to journalism, he pursued a football career, playing for Catania, Ischia, Udinese, and Sassari Torres.
Bruno Pizzul leaves an indelible mark on Italian sports journalism. Though he regretted never being able to commentate on a national team triumph, his career made him one of the most cherished voices in the history of Italian football.
