In the context of the Qatargate investigation, the Belgian Federal Prosecutor's Office has requested that the European Parliament relinquish the immunity of Democratic Party MEPs Alessandra Moretti and Elisabetta Gualmini. The two politicians claimed that they had obtained the information from the press and, in order to demonstrate that they were entirely unrelated to the disputed facts, they have suspended their membership of the S&D Group in order to collaborate with the judiciary. The initial developments of the investigation, which was initiated on December 9, 2022, had already revealed the names of the individuals in question. The investigation pertains to an alleged ring of corruption and illicit influence that is maintained by Morocco and Qatar. The prosecutor's request will be announced at the start of the plenary session on March 10 in Strasbourg and then reviewed by the European Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee.
