The conviction for manslaughter of former director of sports medicine at Careggi, Giorgio Galanti, deemed responsible for the death of Davide Astori, has become final. The defense's appeal was rejected by the Court of Cassation, which upheld the one-year prison sentence on the sixth anniversary of the Fiorentina captain's death on March 4, 2018. The prosecution argues that Astori could have been spared if he had received a proper diagnosis. The footballer died of cardiac arrest caused by arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, a condition that would have manifested itself in the tests that were conducted. Galanti, on the other hand, would have overlooked some irregularities and not ordered additional investigations. The judicial matter is not yet concluded; the prosecutor's office has requested a new conviction for Galanti and two other physicians, who are accused of generating a falsified cardiology certificate. In the initial instance, the doctor was also ordered to pay more than one million euros to Astori's family members, which included his companion, Francesca Fioretti, his daughter, parents, and siblings.
