While the United States reduces military support for Ukraine, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is relaunching with the ReArm Europe plan, intended to strengthen European defense with an 800 billion euro investment. However, the proposal divides public opinion, a survey by Termometro Politico study center shows. Some 35% of respondents reject the initiative, criticizing that the EU always finds money for weapons while imposing austerity on welfare, pensions and health care. An additional 16.4% believe diplomacy, not rearmament, is the way forward. On the other hand, 19.3% strongly support the proposal, believing that Europe should have strengthened militarily long ago, without depending on the US. Finally, 26.5% of Italians rate the initiative positively, although they see it as a choice forced by current international tensions.
