An operation by NAS Carabinieri led to the arrest of 67 people in the provinces of Naples and Salerno as part of an investigation into corruption in the funeral business. The investigation, coordinated by the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office, unveiled an illicit system involving medical executives, employees of the Napoli 1 Centro ASL, municipal officials and entrepreneurs in the funeral industry. At the center of the scandal is an illicit fee schedule for natural death certificates (50 euros) and DNA tests for cremation (70 euros). Investigations documented 300 incidents of fraud over two years, showing how the public officials involved received money to issue false certificates or favor funeral homes. Seized dozens of DNA test kits, more than 30,000 euros in cash and other amounts to be quantified. The investigation also revealed cases of absenteeism among health personnel and the illicit sale of certificates for disabled passes.
