Every Saturday and Sunday, church towers in Verona and surrounding areas—extending into Vicenza and Brescia—come alive creating little concerts with the sound of bells played in a unique way, distinct from the rest of Italy and Europe. It is the so-called "Veronese system," which was developed in the second half of the eighteenth century and allows one to perfectly time the ringing of each bell within the tower. As a result, melodies and songs are performed, albeit at a slower and more simplistic pace than those using other instruments. In Verona alone, over two thousand people, some of whom are very young, continue to ring the bells in their spare time.
