From traveling across the world to traveling through the city streets: with two new exhibitions, the Museum of Cultures of Milan (Mudec) celebrates its first ten years of opening. Milan's Museum of Cultures, which opened on March 27, 2015 in the former Ansaldo steel mill industrial area, has hosted some 70 temporary exhibitions over the years, with a focus on non-European cultures. The first exhibition, "Travelogue. Stories of Travel, Migration and Diasporas", open until September 21, explores the concept of travel through biographies of explorers, traders and collectors who have contributed to Mudec's collection. The tour includes a section on mythical travel, one on transhumance and nomadism, and one on travel objects, from souvenirs to diaries of explorers from the 1800s and 1900s. A collaboration with the Museum of Science and Technology enriches the exhibition with a section dedicated to the means of transportation that revolutionized mobility, from the ocean canoe to Concorde. The second exhibition, "From Muralism to Street Art, Mudec Invasion", open until June 29, transforms the museum into an urban art laboratory. Ten street artists have created site-specific works inside Mudec, challenging the traditional placement of street art in outdoor public spaces. The project, curated by Alice Cosmai, includes a map with more than 60 murals scattered around Milan, offering a visual journey among the city's leading collectives and artists.
