Italy struggles to ensure equal opportunities for women, children and young people, according to the WeWorld Index Italy 2025, presented yesterday in Rome. The report shows that more than one in four women (28.3%) and children (29.9%) live in regions with poor access to basic rights. Women are the most vulnerable group, with a score of 42.4 out of 100, and the most penalized are mothers in southern Italy, where the employment rate falls to 69.5%, reaching its lowest in Sicily (52%). During the event, the "Let's reform the Calendar" petition, promoted by WeWorld, MammadiMerda and the Cambia Una Cosa association, was presented, which has already collected more than 70,000 signatures. The initiative aims to reform the Italian school calendar, which is considered unfair and unsustainable: with 200 school days a year, Italy has the longest calendar in Europe but also one of the longest summer breaks, a legacy of an outdated agricultural system. This model, according to the report, accentuates inequalities, affects the psychophysical well-being of male and female students and complicates the reconciliation of family life and work.
