Former Culture Minister Dario Franceschini, a member of the Democratic Party, has announced the submission of a bill to the Senate to assign children only their mother's surname. The initiative aims to overcome difficulties related to managing double surnames or choosing between paternal and maternal surnames. "After centuries in which children have taken their father's surname, we establish that from the new law they will have only their mother's," Franceschini explained, calling the measure an act of fairness. According to the Dem senator, it is a reparation for a historical injustice that has contributed to gender inequality both culturally and socially.
