Rome's Municipality I has put forward a proposal to introduce a smoking ban in public areas of the historic center, following the example of cities such as Milan, Turin, Melbourne and New York. The initiative, promoted by Councillor Lorenzo Minio Paluello and supported by the Gualtieri Civic List, was presented to the Social Policies Commission and may soon reach the City Council. Currently, smoking is only banned in Rome in public parks and gardens, according to urban police regulations. The new resolution aims to extend the ban to all outdoor public areas, with the exception of dedicated spaces for smokers, equipped with litter bins and information panels. The reference model is that of Milan, where the ban has been applied to streets, parks and dehors since January 2023, with positive results on air quality and citizen acceptance.
