The Internet has been verified as the most popular source of information among Italians, definitively surpassing television. A trend that began in 2023 and has been verified for 2024, with social media, search engines, and newspaper and magazine websites promoting themselves as the primary sources of information. Last year, one in every two Italians used the internet to gather information, with 50.5% of those who use at least one social network stating that they learned about the news while using these platforms. However, it is important to note that 30% of the population maintains a low level of trust in information from social media, a trust that increases to 65.6% when it pertains to information media such as television, radio, or print media. Public television, in particular, is still considered the most reliable source, especially among older age groups.
