The European Commission is closely monitoring events regarding the decree on the migrant center in Albania and is in contact with Italian authorities. This was stated by Markus Lammert, spokesperson for EU Home Affairs, emphasizing that, according to available information, "Italian national law will apply to the center, as has been the case so far for asylum", in accordance with European law. Lammert also stated that Brussels will continue to monitor the protocol's implementation and engage in dialogue with Italy. "We are ready to explore innovative solutions, as long as they comply with the obligations of EU law, international law and fundamental rights", added the spokesperson. Finally, the representative highlighted that this proposal is based on Italian national legislation, as opposed to the concept of a repatriation hub.
