A substantial quantity of pure cocaine was seized in the port of Gioia Tauro. The Guardia di Finanza of Reggio Calabria and the Customs and Monopolies Agency discovered 1,170 kg of cocaine hidden inside flammable packages. The authorities selected and thoroughly inspected 11 suspicious containers from a port in southern Brazil, all destined for a company based in Reggio Calabria, after making a stop in Spain. The containers were initially scanned using an X-ray machine, followed by an inspection with dog units, which allowed the drug load to be identified. The Guardia di Finanza and the Customs Agency stated that if the seized drugs were sold in Italy and throughout Europe, they would have generated more than 187 million euros in revenue.
