The government established a fund to assist the elderly and economically disadvantaged in caring for their pets. The Fund, which will initially be worth 700 thousand euros, will be used for veterinarian consultations, surgical procedures, and the purchase of veterinary drugs. The Undersecretary of Health with responsibility for animal health, Marcello Gemmato, stated, "It is an act of sensitivity and civility, as well as of great attention of the Government, towards the weakest categories who benefit from the company of pets". Pet owners who earn less than 16,215 euros per year and are above the age of 65 will be eligible for assistance. "This measure", Gemmato continues, "represents tangible support for the most vulnerable individuals, contributing to the well-being of companion animals and strengthening the link between public health and animal health".
