Italy has ambitious goals for the space economy, and Puglia is a critical component. In Mola di Bari, the Space Factory 4.0 was initiated as a technological center that is dedicated to the development and production of next-generation satellites. The project, carried out by Sitael (part of Angel Holding), required a 40 million euro investment and is expected to become a backbone of Italy's space program. The objective is ambitious: to establish a constellation of over 100 satellites in low orbit that will be utilized for research, security, and defense in the Mediterranean region within the next five years. The initiative is part of the Iride program, which has received over one billion euros in funding from the NRRP. Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, emphasized Italy's commitment to the sector: "We have increased our contribution to the European Space Agency to more than 3 billion, and we can invest another 7.2 billion in national and European projects". Furthermore, a new space economy law, which is still pending final approval, will provide additional support to the sector's enterprises. Sitael will be a crucial component in the Italian supply chain, working alongside partners such as the Italian Space Agency, Argotec of Turin, Thales of Rome, Cesi of Milan, and Cira of Capua. The new hub's first satellite, Platino-1, was created in collaboration with Leonardo, Thales Alenia Space, and Airbus Italia. It is an electrically powered platform intended for Earth observation and communication missions. At full capacity, the Space Factory 4.0 will create up to 50 satellites each year, bolstering Italy's position in the global space arena.
