Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister of Environment and Energy Security, and Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, both emphasized the government's "strategic interest" in developing breakthrough nuclear power technologies. To do this, the executive intends to assist the projects of Newcleo, a startup created in 2021 and directed by Stefano Buono, which employs 450 people on the peninsula out of a total workforce of over 1,100. However, no definitive decisions have been made regarding how to ensure this support. Rumors emerged about a possible $200 million state investment in the company, but the two ministries later disputed the concept. What is certain is that Newcleo has already raised €400 million in two funding rounds (2021 and 2022). A further capital raise, which is currently ongoing, was initiated in 2023, guaranteeing an additional 137 million. Currently, the shareholding structure consists of 760 shareholders, with 90% of them being Italian. No shareholder holds more than 10% of the company. The board of Newcleo has expressed "deep appreciation for the strategic interest and support of the Italian government" while awaiting the transaction to take shape.
