Bad news for Federica Brignone, the Italian ski champion who, after winning gold in the giant slalom at the World Championships in Saalbach and her second overall World Cup title just days ago, has suffered a serious injury. Yesterday on Alpe Lusia (Val di Fassa), during the second run of the Italian giant slalom championships, Brignone fell due to an abnormal rotation, lost control, and exited through a gate to the right. The hit with the snow was forceful, especially on the right arm, causing considerable spin. Federica was immediately rescued and flown by helicopter to the Santa Chiara hospital in Trento. The CT scan revealed a multi-fragmentary complicated fracture of the tibial plateau and head of the fibula in the left leg. The FISI Medical Commission closely monitored the champion's condition and arranged for Brignone to be taken to the La Madonnina clinic in Milan to begin the surgical procedure.
