On August 9, 2020, Nicolò Guarrera departed from Malo, a town of 14,000 residents in the province of Vicenza, with the intention of embarking on "the most archaic journey around the world," which is to say, on foot. In the previous five years, Guarrera, also known as Pieroad on social media, has traveled tens of thousands of kilometers across four continents (Europe, America, Oceania, and Asia). He is now followed by over 350 thousand people on Instagram, where he is well-known for the candid and spontaneous way in which he discusses the places he visits, his friendly interactions with the people he meets, and his promotion of a simple, environmentally friendly, and slow-moving lifestyle. Guarrera has honed his travel pattern over the last five years: he gets up early to take advantage of the daylight hours and travels an average of 40 kilometers every day, stopping halfway along the way for lunch and to relax his muscles. When he finds a safe and sheltered location to camp, he pitches his tent and organizes his moves for the next day.
