In Italy, emigrants continue to outnumber those who arrive. Almost half a million: that's how many people left Italy to go abroad in the 3-year period 2022-2024. The figure, which emerged from the elaborations of the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore on ISTAT data, photographs a slow and inexorable migration phenomenon that in the last period has undergone an acceleration: after the phase of "obligatory" stagnation coinciding with the pandemic, in 2024 the residents who have disenrolled from the registry office to go across the border were 191 thousand, an increase of +20% over 2023 when emigrants abroad had been 158 thousand, thus registering the highest value observed so far in the aughties. The increase - ISTAT points out - is mostly due to the surge in expatriations of Italian citizens (156 thousand, +36.5% compared to 2023) who head mainly to Germany (12.8%), Spain (12.1%) and the United Kingdom (11.9%), while about 23% of the emigrations of foreigners can be attributed to the return home of Romanian citizens. Bolzano is the first province in terms of the share of emigrants in the population, amounting to 18.4 moved abroad in the three-year period for every 1,000 inhabitants. Imperia ranks second, with 13.5 emigrants per 1,000 residents. The least abandoned city is Taranto, with 4.4 emigrants per 1,000 residents.
