On the occasion of World Health Day, which was celebrated yesterday, President Sergio Mattarella emphasized the importance of the right to health as one of the most significant achievements of modern civilization, the result of decades of civil commitment, popular mobilization, social reforms, and scientific progress. "The recent pandemic experience has highlighted how vulnerable global health is and how crucial it is to invest in robust health systems ready to cope with emergencies", noted Mattarella, who recalled how the pandemic has brought to light the ongoing global challenges faced by public health. The World Health Organization's theme for this year, "A healthy beginning, a future full of hope," focuses on maternal and neonatal health. Mattarella emphasized the significance of enhancing access to prenatal care, training competent health workers, and guaranteeing effective newborn health infrastructure, so they may grow up in a prosperous and dynamic society. The Head of State also noted that, despite the encouraging maternal and infant mortality rates in Italy, the increasing birth rate decline necessitates a consistent and focused dedication to ensuring the quality of health services while preserving the universalistic nature of the Italian health system. "On this day, we recall that safeguarding the right to health from birth is a critical prerequisite for ensuring a future for all citizens, thereby contributing to the vitality of our community", Mattarella concluded.
