"A trade war between Europe and the United States is inconvenient for everyone. Therefore, the challenge is to collaborate with the European Union to establish a positive agreement that can serve as a solution to further integrate our economies, rather than separating them, in order to achieve mutual growth and benefit. The EU has now adopted a response that I regard as preparatory to a non-escalating negotiation. I say this because, had the position been one of escalation, Italy would not have supported it. The challenge to be addressed, on the other hand, is one that Italy was among the first to promote, and which President von der Leyen reiterated yesterday (Monday, ed.), namely the possibility of zeroing reciprocal duties on existing industrial products using the "zero for zero" formula". This was stated yesterday by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, according to sources, during meetings with economic groups on the topic of tariffs. "It appears to me that the President of the Commission and the Commissioner for Trade are both willing to do this. This is the negotiation that must involve us all, at all levels. That includes me: I will be in Washington on April 17, and I intend to raise this issue with the President of the United States".
