In Italy, it is not enrollment in university that is the real obstacle, but rather the possibility of completing the course of study. According to data from the Ministry of University and Research, there were 328,068 new enrollees in the last academic year surveyed, a considerable number considering that there are about half a million graduates each year. The enrollment trend has been steadily growing: ten years ago there were just over one and a half million undergraduates; today there are close to two million. Yet, the graduation rate among young people remains stuck below 30%, marking a worrying gap compared to other European countries. According to AlmaDiploma's Profile of High School Graduates and Their Outcomes at a Distance from Graduation survey, the post-diploma choice is influenced by an intertwining of factors: family influence, the quality of school guidance, the quantity and reliability of information received, starting economic conditions and expectations related to future employment.
