The Court of Cassation has determined that the appropriate term for the electronic identity card is "parent," thereby declining the Interior Ministry's request for the indications "father" and "mother". The news was reported by Il Sole 24 Ore, which published the contents of ruling no. 9216 of 2025. The Supreme Court denied the Ministry of the Interior's appeal against a decision of the Court of Appeal of Rome, which had already ordered the disapplication of the decree of 31 May 2019, which had reinstated the distinction "father/mother" in place of the neutral term "parents". According to the Supreme Court judges, the use of "father" and "mother" is discriminatory, as it fails to account for the diversity of family models and legitimate forms of parentage. The inclusive choice of "parent" is thus regarded as the only one that adheres to the values of equality and non-discrimination.
