Thanks to technology developed by its subsidiary Isotta Fraschini (IFM), Fincantieri is bringing hydrogen on board cruise ships—for the first time in the world. The shipbuilding giant has launched construction sites alongside Viking's Norwegians to create the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship with onboard storage. The announcement was made yesterday in Miami during Seatrade Cruise Global, the cruise tourist industry's global summit. In this context, the Viking Libra is a small cruise ship that the Scandinavian shipowner ordered from Fincantieri in 2020, but with different technologies and due for delivery at the end of 2026. Thanks to a co-investment, the two firms have agreed to install a new cutting-edge hydrogen propulsion system on board, which, when paired with polymer electrolytic membrane fuel cell technology, will be capable of producing up to 6 megawatts of electricity. Exactly the force that enables these ships (54,300 tons in weight, 239 meters in length, and with 499 cabins that can seat up to a thousand passengers) to turn off their engines and not emit pollution in environmentally sensitive ports and locations such as the Norwegian fjords.
