Following the Ligurian Regional Administrative Court's decision to find Rai's direct assignment unlawful, the Municipality of Sanremo opens its doors to competition. The managerial decision has been published, initiating a public process to identify the new partner for the organization and free-to-air transmission of the Italian Song Festival for the 2026, 2027, and 2028 editions, with the possibility of a two-year extension. The procedure will be divided into two phases: the first phase will be selective, which involves the publication of the notice of expression of interest, and the second phase will be negotiated to establish the terms of the agreement with the selected operator. Candidates will have forty days to submit their projects. Only economic operators providing nationally broadcast audiovisual media services, holding a generalist channel, and with proven experience in organizing nationally significant events may participate. The proposal will be evaluated based on its artistic excellence, alignment with the Festival's historical cultural profile, and ability to improve the event and its brands. The chosen partner will have to pay the Municipality at least 6.5 million euros every year, plus a 1% share of advertising revenue and the use of the "Italian Song Festival" and "Sanremo Festival" trademarks. Rai's consolidated tradition and loyal audience will be difficult to undermine, but the challenge is officially open.
