Nearly 1 in 3 (32.6%) Italian children between the ages of 6 and 10 use smartphones every day. This is a sharp increase compared to 2018, when it was less than 1 in 5 (18.4%). The incidence is particularly high in the South and Islands, where 44.4% of children have daily cell phone use, compared to 23.9% in the North. Also worrying are the data on preteenagers: 62.3% of 11-13-year-olds have at least one social account, despite the fact that the legal limit for social use in Italy is set at 14, the minimum age for expressing consent to the processing of personal data. The data come from Save the Children, at the launch of a new campaign on digital education. The goal is to promote a conscious and safe use of the web, reducing risks related to cyberbullying, hate speech, non-consensual dissemination of intimate images and other forms of online violence.
