Garbage is back in the spotlight in Rome, but this time not because of the garbage emergency: coming under the spotlight are the ministries, accused of not paying Tari, the waste tax. According to an access to records presented by Action Capitoline Councilor Antonio De Santis, between 2017 and 2024 the debt accumulated with the Campidoglio amounts to about 17 million euros. At the top of the delinquent list is the Ministry of Defense, with more than 6 million euros in arrears, followed by the Viminale with 4 million. Transportation, led by Matteo Salvini, is also in arrears, although the debt has been halved in the last year (from 4 to 2.6 million euros). Culture (from 800,000 to nearly 2 million euros), Health (600,000 euros) and Justice (744,000 euros) are also bad. Even the Prime Minister's Office is in the red by more than a million euros, although Palazzo Chigi lets them know that there are no pending debts and that, on the contrary, they have a credit of 146 thousand euros. And there is a touch of irony in the Economy's accounts: the ministry has accumulated 84 thousand euros in debt for the tax it is supposed to control. The only ministry really in compliance? That of Agriculture, along with the Chamber and Senate, which are not on the list of delinquent or late payers.
