The Vatican is also present at the Osaka Expo, inaugurated on Sunday on the artificial island of Yumeshima. The event is dedicated to innovation and sustainability and is centered around the theme "Outlining the society of the future for our lives". It is an outstanding worldwide display in which around 160 countries and various international organizations take part. The Holy See pavilion's exploration of art and aesthetics aims to express a deep concept: beauty, experienced in many dimensions, can be a source of inspiration for the development of a more harmonious society. At the center of the Vatican pavilion in Osaka is Caravaggio’s Deposition, on loan for six months from the Vatican Museums. Pope Francis picked this composition specifically to communicate a message of hope. The Holy See pavilion mixes Christian and Japanese themes, portraying St. Peter's dome and the rising sun, as well as references to Japanese Sumi-e calligraphy. The "Deposition" at the Vatican pavilion is regarded as one of Michelangelo Merisi's, also known as Caravaggio, best works. It was commissioned by Girolamo Vittrice for the family chapel at S. Maria in Vallicella (Chiesa Nuova), Rome
