The District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Palermo has ordered the arrest of Floriana Calcagno, 40, a teacher and niece of mafia boss Francesco Luppino. According to investigators, she played an active role in supporting Matteo Messina Denaro during the final months of his time on the run, providing logistical assistance, material and moral support. The charges against her include aggravated aiding and abetting and facilitating the evasion of the sentence. According to the investigations, which are supported by video surveillance images, phone records, and collected statements, the woman would have accompanied the mafia boss on his movements between Campobello di Mazara, Mazara del Vallo, Tre Fontane, and other locations in the Trapani area, using her own car to ensure his confidentiality and avoid the risk of arrest. Calcagno, whose husband had already been convicted of favoring another mafia figure, spontaneously presented herself to the Public Prosecutor's Office on January 21, 2023, five days after Messina Denaro was apprehended. On that occasion, she stated that she had only recently uncovered the genuine identity of the man with whom she had been in a relationship, alleging that he had presented himself to her as Francesco Salsi, a retired anesthesiologist. According to her narrative, the encounter would have taken place in a supermarket in 2022, and the relationship would have grown out of a personal and family crisis. However, authorities believe the woman's role went far deeper, to the point of actively supporting one of Cosa Nostra's most wanted bosses during his fugitive years.
