According to a poll conducted by mUp Research and Norstat, 2.8 million Italians have been victims of e-commerce scams or attempted fraud over the last year, resulting in a total economic loss of more than 500 million euros. Compared to the 2023 findings, the number of fraud victims or attempts in this field has risen by 9%. Fake websites are the most common tactic employed by thieves, accounting for 39.4% of all cases, followed by fake e-mail (30.3%). More than one in every four frauds (25.8%) were carried out via social networks, with instant messaging apps accounting for 15.9% of incidents. Contrary to popular belief, younger customers are more likely to become victims of online fraud or attempted fraud. In comparison to the national average of 6.7%, the number jumps to more than 8% in both the 25-34 and 45-54 age groups. When analyzing the level of education of victims of fraud or attempted fraud, it emerges that those with a university degree are the most impacted, with a frequency that is more than double the norm. In many cases, victims (49.2%) choose not to report the incident.
