The importance of Italian companies among the world's large family enterprises is on the rise. The current Global 500 Family Business Index by EY with Saint Gallen University includes 22 national enterprises with an overall turnover of 179 billion dollars. There were 20 in the previous edition of the index (which is published every two years), with 160 billion dollars in revenue, 12% less than today. In terms of the number of significant family businesses considered, Italy occupies the fourth position in the Global 500 Family Business Index (where the United States is the leader with 116 companies) and the third position in Europe (Germany has 78, France 27). Despite two companies dropping off the list, four new Italian entries were added this year: Mapei, Veronesi Holding (Aia), Brembo, and Gruppo Pam. The Exor group is at the top of the Italian rankings, having risen from 38th to 31st in the worldwide index. With the exception of Saras, which has since changed ownership, Edizione dei Benetton is the second Italian family company in the world classification of the category (185th, previously 166th). Italiana Petroli follows, rising from 343rd to 186th place thanks to the growth of the oil & gas sector.
