There are four main dossiers that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will take with her on her official mission to the United States, where she is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Donald Trump. A meeting that, according to diplomatic sources, has also received the approval of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who is interested in strengthening transatlantic relations with a view to future direct contacts between the European Union and the United States. On the table will be strategic issues for Italy and the entire Euro-Atlantic arrangement. At the forefront is the NATO countries' commitment to allocate 2% of GDP to defense spending, with Italy reportedly considering a gradual increase to 3.5%. Another key issue is the purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States: today it covers about 25% of Italian gas consumption. There will be no shortage of reflection on a possible revision of the European Green Deal, an issue on which Rome intends to initiate discussions with Washington. The visit takes place in close coordination with Brussels. This was also confirmed by European Commission spokeswoman Arianna Podestà: "Any contact with the United States is welcome. Of course, the competence to negotiate trade agreements lies with the European Union, but the visit is very welcome and closely coordinated. Meloni and von der Leyen have been in constant contact".
