In Quarna Sotto, a small village on the outskirts of Lake Orta, tradition meets innovation due to Rampone & Cazzani, a traditional artisan wind instrument manufacturer that is now a worldwide reference point for saxophone manufacturing. Founded in 1818 by Agostino Rampone, the company has its roots in woodworking and music, passing down the technique of hand-building through generations. From nineteenth-century Milan, where Rampone learnt the art of turner, the company relocated to Quarna Sotto in 1848, taking advantage of the river and local woodlands. In this location, it is claimed that Rampone encountered Adolphe Sax, which resulted in the creation of the first Italian saxophones. The Rampone & Cazzani brand was officially founded in 1910, when Egidio Rampone married Cazzani's daughter, who was also an instrument manufacturer. Today, the Zolla family - Roberto, Claudio, and Simone, descendants of the Rampone - leads the company, with a dozen associates supporting them. They use digital tools and 3D prototypes, but the production process is still very artisanal: each sax is made from a simple brass plate (or copper, silver, or gold), which is hand-modeled and made up of over a thousand parts. The latest creation, the “Due Voci,” is a tenor and soprano saxophone with a solid silver bell, giving the instrument a unique sound. Among the artists who choose Rampone & Cazzani saxophones are Jan Garbarek, Jerry Bergonzi, Stefano Bedetti, and many others.
