The 2025 edition of the Stati Generali della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo (States General of the Italian Language in the World), the main institutional event dedicated to the promotion of Italian abroad, opened yesterday at MAXXI in Rome. At the center of the proceedings was the proposal launched by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani: the creation of a Global Community of Italophony, a project that will be deepened in the International Conference scheduled for the fall. The concluding document - entitled “Towards a Global Community of Italophony” - calls for the creation of a network formed by states and civil society representatives united by their interest in the Italian language. The goals include political dialogue, international cooperation, cultural and educational exchanges, and the promotion of Italian in every sphere - including the scientific, economic and digital sectors. Many actions are proposed: creation of a digital platform and a Community Secretariat; strengthening of teaching and training, including with the help of AI; enhancement of Italian language departments and centers; academic mobility and the establishment of “Italofonia” summer schools; promotion of the language in the media, libraries, theater, cinema, music and gastronomy; support for the publication and translation of works in Italian, including scientific works; encouragement of economic exchanges and contrast to “Italian sounding”; and development of languages and content in Italian, including in the field of artificial intelligence. The declaration emphasizes the value of the Italian language as a tool for dialogue between cultures, a vehicle for inclusion, an expression of creativity and a bridge between tradition and innovation. A common heritage for millions of Italian speakers, Italophiles and Italian-descendants around the world.
