Two victims in Veneto, landslides in Trentino, and thousands without electricity in Aosta Valley: this is the toll of the latest wave of severe weather that has struck Northern Italy in recent hours.
In Trissino, in the province of Vicenza, the bodies of a father and son — Francesco Leone Nardon, 65, and his son Francesco, 34 — have been recovered. The two had been missing since Thursday evening, when their car fell into a sinkhole that had opened up on the Valdagno bridge due to heavy rainfall, eventually ending up in the Agno river. They were on their way to Valdagno to volunteer in rescue efforts following widespread flooding.
“A tragic and unthinkable event,” said Veneto’s regional president, Luca Zaia, who has declared a state of emergency for municipalities in the provinces of Vicenza and Verona. “The ground literally gave way beneath the feet of two people who went out to help — they were not just bystanders,” he added.
In Trento, a landslide struck the San Martino district, affecting a residential building. Fourteen people were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported, but local traffic remains disrupted.
Serious disruptions have also been reported in Aosta Valley, where around 6,400 households remain without electricity. Restoration efforts — carried out with the help of helicopters — are being hampered by limited access to affected areas. The most critical situation remains in Cogne, while power has been restored in the Valdigne area, from Courmayeur to La Thuile.
