Open-air tourism continues to expand and establishes itself as one of the most dynamic parts of the Italian tourism industry. According to data updated to 2024, presences in open-air facilities (campsites and rest areas) reached 71 million, representing a 16% increase over 2023 and producing a total turnover of €8 billion. This growth is driven by over 2,000 equipped areas and a similar number of campsites across the country. Numbers that will be showcased from September 13 to 16 at the 16th edition of the Salone del Camper in Parma. The event, organized by Fiere di Parma in partnership with APC (Association of Caravan and Camper Manufacturers), has become a must-see in Italy - and second in Europe in terms of visitor numbers - for all outdoor holiday enthusiasts. Hundreds of recreational vehicles, equipment, and a showcase on responsible travel, such as midcentric tourism, uncrowd tourism, and slow tourism, will be available in five exhibition halls. Outdoor tourism is more than just an economic trend: it is also a conscious choice. According to a 2024 study conducted by Visa in cooperation with Ipsos, 46% of Italian visitors are willing to pay up to 5% more for environmentally friendly products and services. Over 80% believe it is critical to have access to platforms that allow for the selection of environmentally friendly modes of transportation, housing, restaurants, itineraries, and activities. And the environmental benefits are tangible: a survey conducted by Ergo, a spin-off of the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, found that camper vacations have a 30% lower impact on climate change, 36% less consumption of natural resources, and 27% less water use than other types of vacations.
