A genuine connection, characterized by silent gestures and words that touched the heart. This is how Pope Francis loved prisoners to the very last. The emotional account is given by Monsignor Benoni Ambarus, bishop delegate for charity and prisons and a direct witness of a deep and sincere relationship. "A few days before his death, he dragged himself to Regina Coeli. He had no strength left, yet he wanted to be present. With his presence, he shouted to the world that no one should be forgotten behind bars", Ambarus says. And he continues, "His last possessions?" He left them with 200,000 euros from his personal account." A gesture away from the spotlight is more powerful than a thousand sermons. The Pope did not limit himself to symbols: he washed inmates' feet, opened the Holy Door of Rebibbia (second only to St. Peter's), and requested a real sign, a symbolic decrease in sentence. However, the institutions have not responded. "When we talked about prison, I saw him suffering", confesses Ambarus, "He was heartbroken".
