Preparations for Pope Francis' funeral proceed secretly in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Workers are at the site, shielded from public view by wooden panels, arranging the area that will house the Pope’s remains, in accordance with his wish for a sober and reflective burial. In his will, dated June 29, 2022, Pope Francis requested to be buried between the Pauline Chapel and the Sforza Chapel, in a simple tomb with a single word engraved: "Franciscus". This choice is congruent with his pastoral style, which was characterized by humility and devotion. The Basilica of St. Mary Major was a spiritually significant destination for him. He would frequently visit the place to pray before the icon of the Salus Populi Romani, confiding in Mary with the most significant moments of his pontificate.
