Pecorino Toscano dop: growing production and exports

(June 14, 2017) Pecorino Toscano Dop flies abroad and consolidates on the Italian market. This according to the 2016 data from the Pecorino Toscano Dop Conservation Consortium, with over 1 million and 500 thousand pieces produced and 1 million and 125 thousand pieces sold between soft and seasoned, for a turnover of about 24.2 million euros, Up 2.02 percent from the previous year. Total sales revenue is over 50 million euros. On the export front, the increase was equal to 28.64 percent, which translates to nearly 4.4 million euros in turnover and sees a sharp rise in product on European markets. The positive trend was also confirmed in the first four months of 2017, where production increased by 2.77 percent over the same period of 2016. The data, objectives and prospects of the Consortium were presented today, Wednesday, June 14, in the presence of the President and the Director of the Consortium, Carlo Santarelli and Andrea Righini, Regional Agriculture Assessor Marco Remaschi and Regional Councilor Leonardo Marras. The production and processing 2016 data of the 17 consortium dairies refer to more than 34 million and 156 thousand liters of milk coming from 870 farmers, of whom 245 are directly associated with the Consortium, an increase compared to 2015 of 12.73 percent. The liters of milk for the production of Pecorino Toscano DOP were 20 million and 135 thousand euros, or 14.75 percent more than in the previous year, and were processed into more than 3.651 tons of Pecorino Toscano DOP (+24 , 02 per cent on 2015), of which 1,154 tons soft (+1.14 per cent) and 1,282 tons seasoned (+ 1.98 per cent). The product sold was 2,436 tons, an increase of 1.58 percent over the previous year.
