Research, Italy networking in China: new opportunities on the silk road

(June 26, 2017) "You are the best example of the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation as well as the intellectual curiosity that Italy exports all over the world. Thanks to you, our country is increasingly appreciated in China as an avant-garde Country in scientific and technological research”. So the Ambassador of Italy in Beijing, Ettore Sequi, launched the First Day of Italian Research in China, organized on June 23 at the Embassy. Sequi, in his keynote speech, addressed directly over 50 Italian researchers and professors from all over the country who took part in the event. The aim of the Day was to set up one of the most important and cutting-edge components of the Italian System in China. The Italian researchers here are indeed one of the strengths of our presence in this country, which, according to the discussion, offers a favorable climate for research, thanks to the excellent availability of high-quality financial resources and infrastructures. China, in fact, strong in its openness and internationalization, is becoming an increasingly interesting destination for young Italian talents, attracted by the two major hubs of research, Beijing and Shanghai, now two of the most important research areas in the world. "China is an extraordinary opportunity not only for individual researchers but for all of our research system, where new opportunities for large and ambitious bilateral projects are opened", said the scientific officer in Beijing, Plinio Innocenzi, during his speech at the event. ABOUT / SCIENTIFIC COLLABORATION

The presence of Italian researchers in China has grown in recent years both quantitatively and qualitatively. A very positive trend confirmed by the data of bilateral scientific collaboration, exponentially increased in recent years, as evidenced by the growth (+ 250%) of the joint publications realized since 2010. Just to help and facilitate entry into the Chinese research system, Italian researchers have formed an association, the Italian Academic Association in China. Italy and China are involved in major scientific projects involving, among others, the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) in the field of particle physics and the Italian Spatial Space Agency (ASI) in the field of space, for the realization of scientific satellites. A collaboration that extends successfully to other subjects, including: medicine, new materials, cultural heritage, architecture and engineering.
