(July 5, 2017) In 2014, Professor Fabio Caradonna, Genetics Researcher at the Department of Biological Chemistry and Pharmaceuticals (Stebicef) of the University of Palermo, received funding from the Consorzio Universitario Italiano per l’Argentina (Italian University Consortium for Argentina - CUIA) for Research on the pharmacogenetics of tuberculosis. These researches, coordinated and conducted by Dr. Alessandro Perez, currently taking a PhD at the Department of Surgical, Oncological and Dental Disciplines, allowed Dr. Gabriela De Larranaga and her collaborator Dr. J. Chamorro of the Hospital of Buenos Aires "Muniz" to genotypize for the CYP2E1 gene in patients with tuberculosis who until then were treated with standard antibiotic doses. After two years the hospital sees a significant reduction in cases of hepatic toxicity due to overdose of therapy for these patients: a result of great social and health impact that was presented at National Congress of the Argentine Society of Infective Diseases (SADI 2017) receiving the first prize as Best Work of 2017.
