On Single Day, there is nothing to celebrate for the roughly 8.4 million Italians who live alone and face an average cost of living that is 90% more than the per capita cost of a normal family of three, a scenario exacerbated by bill hikes caused by the energy crisis. This is the conclusion of an investigation by Coldiretti, which, for the day devoted to bachelors and single women that is commemorated today, compared the expenses of living alone with the average expenditures of each normal family member, based on ISTAT data. Singles' Day, which originated in China in the 1990s, has become an international holiday. The reason 11/11 is commemorated is because the 1 symbolizes a lonely heart. Singles have climbed by over 5% in the previous five years to over 8.4 million, accounting for one in every three Italian households. However, the rise in single-person families is creating a true obstacle course in everyday living, often owing to financial concerns.
