“Writing like breathing”, Dacia Maraini at the ICI

(13 February 2017) “Dacia Maraini, Writing Like Breathing”, Dacia Maraini in conversation with Jane Tylus, Professor of Italian at the New York University on February 21 (18:00-20:00) at the Italian Cultural Institute of New York. The title of the event refers to writing as a constant in history, an idea that goes hand in hand with literature in all its forms: prose, poetry, and theatre. The novelist, playwright, critic, activity and filmmaker Dacia Maraini is one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Italian culture and the winner of prestigious awards in Italian literature such as the Campiello and Strega Awards. Her books have been translated in 22 different languages and some of her most famous work (“Storia di Piera”, “L’Età del Malessere”, “La lunga vita di Marianna Ucrìa”, “Voci, e memorie di una ladra”) has been adapted into films. JANE TYLUS


Jane Tylus is Professor of Italian Studies and Comparative Literature at the New York University where she is also part of the Consulting Committee for the Humanities. Her most recent publications include the monography “Siena, City of Secrets” (2015), “Reclaiming Catherine of Siena: Literature, Literacy, and the Signs of Others” (2009), “The Poetics of Masculinity in Early Modern Italy and Spain”. The latter was written in collaboration with Gerry Milligan (2010) and a translation of Gaspare Stampa’s complete works (2010).
