Theatre, cinema and music for Luigi Pirandello’s 150th birth anniversary

(February 14, 2017) Luigi Pirandello had strong connections to Malta. His maternal grandfather Giovanni Ricci Gramito, an anti-bourbon, was exiled and died in Malta on 1 August 1850. Gramito brought with him in Malta all his family, including his young daughter Caterina, mother of Luigi Pirandello. Pirandello recounts at length the stories of his grandfather in Lettere giovanili and I vecchi e I giovani. From this connection – it is written on a note by the IIC in Valletta - between these two Islands at the heart of the Mediterranean was born the idea of organizing an event which links all the possible and different aspects of the works of the 1934 Nobel Prize. The Appointment with “Theatre, cinema and music for Luigi Pirandello’s 150th birth anniversary” is scheduled for Thursday, February 16 at 6.30 PM at the hall of the IIC, organized in collaboration with Centro Nazionale di Studi Pirandelliani and Pirandello Stable Festival of Agrigento, under the patronage of Assemblea Regionale Siciliana’s President. The programme of the evening includes: the premier of the short film Pirandello e Malta (in English language), a talk titled Pirandello: Verita’, Identita’ Relative e Ragione degli altri, a presentation on Pirandello e il Cinema during which films based on Pirandello’s works will be screened, a performance of Pirandello’s works by a professional actor and also a performance of Pirandellian’s songs accompanied by Sicilian Music.
