The Italian Cooperation in Lebanon in support of the union of the municipalities of Shahhar

(April 5, 2017) A project to support the union of the municipalities of Shahhar (Mount Lebanon), involved in the Syrian crisis, for a better exploitation of natural resources, to support the most vulnerable population, both Syrian and Lebanese, and social cohesion increasing the economic resources available to families. It took place in recent days in Beysour (Mount Lebanon) the closing ceremony of the project "Support Initiative Union of Municipalities of Shahhar for the exploitation of environmental resources and support to the vulnerable population and the Lebanese refugee" funded by the Italian Cooperation and implemented by the NGO Terre des Hommes Italy, in partnership with the Union of Municipalities of Shahhar. The event was attended by Michel Saad - Chairman of the Union of Municipalities Shahhar - and the mayors of the municipalities of Rimhala, Ainab, Baysour, Bmakine, Chemlane, Bennay, Kfarmatta, Bsatene, Mejedlaya, Kaifun and Dfoun. The project employed unskilled labor by means of the temporary employment scheme (cash for work) for the provision of public services at the Union of Municipalities of Shahhar, an area with a large influx of refugees from Syria. During the project - carried out from June 2016 to March 2017 - in the temporary employment scheme 513 were involved economically vulnerable people, of which about 70% of Syrian nationality, for a period of about 20 days. ABOUT / REHABILITATION AND MAINTENANCE


The direct beneficiaries participated in the rehabilitation of green areas and extraordinary maintenance of municipal roads. The project also supported the Union of Municipalities of Shahhar in the management of waste separation. From 2015 to today, the initiatives funded by the Italian Cooperation which use their temporary employment methodology involving nearly 5,200 people and 42 municipalities in Lebanon.
