(5 October 2018) The University of Pisa confirms its commitment to international cooperation for health and development. Thanks to the agreement signed last December between Unipi, Doctors with Africa CUAMM and Fondazione Arpa, four students in their sixth year of Medicine left for Angola as part of the humanitarian mission of Doctors with Africa CUAMM. The students from Pisa will undergo a period of training in the hospital of Chiulo, in October and November. The health facility, run by CUAMM doctors, is located in the deep south of Angola and is the only 2nd level health unit present in the region in the northern part of the Cunene Province - the sole site equipped with an operating room in which a caesarean section can be performed. Since 2012, the Chiulo Hospital and its territory have been involved in the CUAMM programme "Mothers and children first" - an initiative that aims to guarantee free access to safe childbirth, to the care of the newborn and, in a subsequent phase (2017-2021), to the general protection of mothers and newborns' health during the first 1000 days of life, with a particular attention to nutrition of the expectant mother and the child up to 2 years.
