Wimbledon: Giorgi takes over Makarova and goes to the Quarter Finals

(9 July 2018) Nine years after Francesca Schiavone, another "azzurra" makes it to the quarter finals of "The Championships". Camila Giorgi has indeed landed a place among the best eight at Wimbledon - the third Slam of the current season on All England Lawn Tennis. The 26 year old from Macerata, number 52 in the world rankings, in her second career meeting in the tournament quarter - six years after her first meeting, in 2012, when it was halted by Aga Radwanska - defeated the Russian left-handed Ekaterina Makarova, ranked 35 in the world rankings and who in 2014 boasted reaching the quarter finals, yesterday 6-3, 6- 4, in just under an hour.
Giorgi thus became the fifth Italian in the quarters on the Church Road lawns after Lucia Valerio (1933), Laura Golarsa (1989), Silvia Farina (2003), and Francesca Schiavone (2009). Serena Williams will be her next opponent for her today, ranked 181 but 25th seeded (seven time Wimbledon winner), who defeated the Russian Evgeniya Rodinapassed in two sets, ranked 120th, after the qualifications.
